Best Bumper Plates For Weightlifting And CrossFit

weight plates on the ground

Today, I want to help you find the best bumper plates for your home gym whether you’re weightlifting to get stronger, doing CrossFit at home, or you just want to stay fit with a wide range of strength building exercises.

In this post, I’m going to go over some of my top recommendations for bumper plates and make some suggestions that I believe stand apart from all of the different options available to choose from online.

I was first introduced to this type of Olympic weight plate back in my university gym when I first started weight lifting and since then I have found them to be superior to your standard steel or rubber plate.

Rather than just rambling on about why I’m a huge fan of using bumper plates, let’s dive into my recommendations, and if you’re looking for more information then just scroll to the bottom part of this post for an in-depth guide.

The Best Bumper Plates (My Recommendations)

X Training Equipment Premium Color Bumper Plates

X Training Equipment Premium Color

The X Training Equipment Premium Color Bumper Plates would definitely be my first recommendation if you’re looking to pick up some durable and high quality bumper plates.

These are designed with solid rubber and they come with steel insert rings that provide a good fit on standard sized Olympic barbells.

There isn’t a complete set that you can pick up all that once, however you can choose from four different weights depending on what you’re looking for.

The weights come in all different colors (black, yellow, blue, red) and you can choose a set in 15 pounds, 25 pounds, 35 pounds, and 45 pounds.

The lower sets, the 15 and 25 pound plates, actually come in a pair, although for the 35 and 35 pound plates you have to buy them separately.

What I really love about these is that they come color coded, making it really easy to keep an eye on the weight I need and it also adds a touch of color to my home gym.

I also like the fact that the weight is written on both sides of the plates in both kilograms and pounds, so it’s really easy to quickly determine how much you’re lifting regardless of which measurement system you’re using

I would definitely recommend checking out the X Training Equipment Premium Color Bumper Plates if you’re looking for some durable and high-quality plates start incorporating into your lifting routine.

X Training Equipment Premium Black Bumper Plates

X Training Equipment Premium Black

The X Training Equipment Premium Black Bumper Plates are very similar to the ones that I just recommended, except that they come in all black and they’re also available to pick up in a set.

Depending on your preferences you might be interested in going with some plates that are all the same color, maybe to match your dumbbells or gym interior.

Just like with the plates I just mentioned, these come with the weight in both pounds and kilogram on the outside, and they’re designed to provide a snug fit on a standard Olympic barbell.

The warranty is rather short, just 180 days, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for something with a better warranty.

Another thing I noticed is that with the black plates you can actually get a wider range of weights.

Of course you get the 10, 15, 35, and 45 pound weights, but with these there is also a 25 pound weight, which is great if you’re looking for more versatility during your lifting routine.

Along with the single sets and pairs, you can also pick up two full sets with a 230 lb and 260 lb limit.

These full sets are a good choice if you’re a intermediate lifter or you’re looking to start taking weight lifting more seriously and you want to progress into higher weights and heavier compound lifts during training.

I would recommend checking out the X Training Equipment Premium Black Bumper Plates if you’re looking for all black plates, you want the 25 lb one, or if you just want to pick up everything in a single set rather than having to buy each plate on its own.

CAP Barbell Premium Bumper Plates

CAP Barbell Premium

The CAP Barbell Premium Bumper Plates are available in a range of different pairs depending on the total weight you’re looking to use during your workouts.

The pairs start at 10 pounds and range up to 45 pounds with a 15 pound, 25 pound, and 35 pound pair available.

I’ve run into some of the CAP products before, like when I was looking for a dumbbell rack, and I have to say that I find them to be decent quality and reliable for working out with.

These plates come in black and they’re made from recycled rubber, so you can relax knowing that you’re doing your part for the environment.

There is a steel insert that fits onto standard size Olympic barbells and this helps to keep the plates from rattling around too much and also helps to prevent the bar from getting damaged during your lifts.

On the outside of the plates is the total weight in both kilograms and pounds, so it doesn’t matter which measurement system you’re using, you can always check to see how much you’re lifting at any given time.

While I do prefer the complete sets, it’s still a good idea to pick up specific pairs at a time because you can only grab what you need and it’s a lot more affordable and easier to upgrade as you get stronger over time.

Rep Fitness Bumper Plates

Rep Fitness

I actually really like the Rep Fitness Bumper Plates because there are a surprising amount of different weights available to choose from.

With so many different weights, this makes it really easy to progress through your own routine rather than having to make such large jumps for heavy compound lifts.

As for the weights available, it’s possible to pick up 5 pound, 10 pound, 15 pound, 25 pound, 35 pound, and 45 pound plates (having the smaller 5 pound can be such a lifesaver sometimes).

Apart from all of these different weights available in pairs, there are also a few sets available from Rep Fitness that you can pick up to get everything all at once.

For the sets, you can pick up 160 pound, 190 pound, 210 pound, 230 pound, 250 pound, 260 pound, and even a 370 pound set of bumper plates.

This way it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner looking to start lifting weights or your intermediate to professional lifter hoping to fill out your home gym, there is bound to be something available for you with such a wide range of different weights.

The plates themselves come with steel inserts and they even have these molded hooks, which helps to keep them more durable and also helps to prevent the insert from popping out.

The weight on the outside is just in pounds, which shouldn’t be an issue for most Americans, but if you’re European or Canadian you’re going to have to do some quick conversions in your head into kilograms.

All of the plates have been tested with more than 15,000 drops, and this leads me to believe that these are quite reliable for long term use.

When it comes to the warranty, there is a 1 year warranty available on the smaller 10 and 15 pound plates, and there is 3 year warranty available on the bigger 25, 35, and 45-pound plates.

I would definitely recommend checking out the Rep Fitness Bumper Plates if you’re looking to pick up some quality plates, including the smaller 5 pound option, or if you want to pick up an entire set all at once to start working out with everything you need right away.

Ader Sporting Goods Rubber Bumper Plate Set

ader goods bumper set

The Ader Sporting Goods Rubber Bumper Plate Set is a great set of plates that comes with the weight you need to get started with some compound lifts right away.

In this set you get 260 pounds of total weight, making this a good choice whether you’re a beginner lifter looking to start building strength or you’re an intermediate lifter already working through a compound lifts routine.

There are five different pairs of bumper plates ranging in total weight from 10 pounds with a 15, 25, 35, and a 45-pound pair of weights.

What I love most about this set is that it comes with a plate rack, so everything is already organized and you don’t have to spend even more money to keep the plates off the floor.

On the outside of the plates is the total weight listed in pounds, and unfortunately there isn’t a kilogram listing.

I really like the Ader Sporting Goods Rubber Bumper Plate Set because it comes with just all the weights you need to get started lifting right away and the rack is a huge bonus because it helps to keep everything organized and easily accessible from the beginning.

Information Guide

What are Bumper Plates?

You might have seen them before at your local or university gym, but bumper plates are weight-lifting plates that are made completely of rubber.

The reason for this design is to protect both the floor and the plates themselves from getting damaged when they’re dropped.

They also are usually color coded and many people find them easier to handle than your standard plates.

The reason why I started using them in my own home gym is because I was able to drop heavier weights right onto the ground without worrying about damaging my garage floor or damaging the weights themselves from so many drops.

The rubber design also isn’t as noisy when it’s dropped on the ground, and even when I’m using pads there is a noticeable difference in sound between the steel plates and the bumper ones, with the steel plates being a lot louder overall.

It’s possible to pick up plates in both kilograms and pounds, depending on your preferences, and it’s a good idea to choose plates using the weight system that you’re most comfortable with.

Although many of the plate options come in different colors, you can pick up a set that’s completely black as well if that’s what you would prefer.

Buying Guide

When you’re in the market for a new set of bumper plates, here are a few of the different features that you want to consider and keep an eye out for.

Dead Bounce

This feature is pretty hard to get a feel for if you’re buying online, but the dead bounce is what you want to look for when you drop the plate on the ground.

A dead bounce is going to result in a very small bounce, or hardly any bounce at all, and this is very important when it comes to safely dropping a loaded barbell on to the floor.

The rubber exterior design of bumper plates is in place to prevent bouncing as much as possible and plates with the least amount of bounce will have a center ring that lasts longer as well as better longevity with the plates themselves.

Center Ring Durability

Speaking of the center ring, when you’re looking for the best bumper plates you’re going to want to keep an eye out for a metal center ring that’s properly attached to the plate.

This ring is where you slide the barbell through to get the plates on to bar, and it helps to keep them in place when you’re lifting.

If something happens to the ring, like if it gets damaged or falls out, it’s nearly impossible to reattach it on your own and without the ring the plate is basically unusable.

Keep an eye out for durable center rings that are properly recessed into the plate itself, so that there isn’t any direct metal on metal contact between the plates.

Budget

Of course, your budget plays an important role in the bumper plates that you end up settling on.

I would avoid going with the cheapest and poorest quality plates just to save a bit of money, and if you’re on a tight budget you can either save up some extra money or spend some extra time doing more research to find the best possible plates in your price range.

You will also buying a bumper plate set, rather than buying a pair of time, and you can always start off with a lower weight set until you’re ready to upgrade to something heavier as your weight lifting progresses.

Like with many products, you get what you pay for, though there are still some reasonably priced plates that you can pick up for a decent price if you’re looking to build a home gym on a budget.

For those of you looking to spend as little as possible, make sure to read reviews of the different sets that you’re interested in and don’t forget to look over the features to make sure that you’re getting what you want,

Plate Size

Bumper plates come in all different shapes and sizes, and because of the rubber design there are quite a few options that are rather thick.

I would actually recommend keeping an eye out for the thinner plates, as you might eventually run out of space on the bar if the ones you’re using are too thick.

Thinner plates allow you to add more weight to the bar, and this is especially important if you’re using a smaller barbell for things like curls.

Warranty

The last feature you should consider is the warranty that your bumper plates come with.

Despite there being so many durable options to choose from, this is not enough to rely on for the long-term, and having a good warranty will put your mind at ease when it comes to problems or issues your plates might experience.

This isn’t to say that you could have years and years of use out of a single set of plates, but it’s better to be safe rather than sorry, so double check to see what the warranty is like with any sets that you’re interested in.
