When you first start building your own home gym there are a lot of separate pieces of equipment that you want to consider picking up.

One of the first things that I recommend getting is a weight rack for your dumbbells, and also some sort of rack for your plates if you’re going to be doing compound lifts using a barbell.

What I like about using dumbbells is that you don’t need much additional equipment, with an adjustable weight bench being one more thing I’d recommend picking up so that you can get started working out right away.

In this post I want to share with you some of my top recommendations when it comes to the best weight rack that you can use for storing your dumbbells and keeping them organized in your own home gym.

I’ll also make some recommendations for the best weight plate rack, just in case you’re doing some compound or Olympic lifts with a barbell and you want to keep your plates organized off of the ground.

After my recommendations, feel free to scroll through my buyers guide for some helpful buying tips as well as some advice on choosing the right rack for your preferences.

Well, let’s get started!

The Best Weight Rack for Dumbbells (and Plates)

Marcy 3-Level

Marcy 3-Level

The Marcy 3-Level is a well-built, practically designed, durable rack, and I believe it’s the best dumbbell rack for most people.

There are a few reasons that I really like it and why I’d recommend taking a look at it if you’re looking for a weight rack to use at home.

For starters, it boasts a solid steel design and comes with a powder coated finish, making it a durable choice and capable of handling a number of heavy weights.

The frame utilizes a durable welded construction to help keep it sturdy when it’s fully loaded.

There are these rubberized feet that are designed to protect your floor and to prevent the rack from sliding around whenever you’re re-loading your dumbbells onto it.

The layout allows you to easily grab or put back the dumbbells you’re using without having to awkwardly move around, making it easy to keep everything organized and in place however you like.

As for the total weight limit, this rack can support up to 800 lbs of weights, which is a decent range for most beginner and intermediate lifters.

When it comes to putting it together, the simple design means you can get the rack setup and ready to use rather quickly.

Overall, the Marcy 3-Level is a suitable rack for your dumbbells if you’re looking for something durable, easy to assemble, and featuring a stable design without having to go too overboard when it comes to budget.

CAP Barbell 24″

CAP Barbell 24"

The CAP Barbell 24″ is a good choice if you’re looking for a smaller rack to use in your home gym, and you’re hoping to pick something up on a budget without going too overboard.

This rack is capable of holding up to 300 lbs of dumbbells, so it’s ideal if you’re a beginner and you want to keep your smaller selection of weights organized, off the floor, and ready to access for your workout.

The frame is made from steel and the compact design is a good idea if you have a small workout space and you want something compact that isn’t going to take up too much space in your home gym/workout area.

Along with dumbbells you can also use the CAP Barbell 24″ for storing things like a medicine ball and even some kettlebells, depending on how many different weights you have.

Assembly is quite straightforward, and I really like the wide base legs with the plastic caps that help to keep the rack in place when you’re adding or removing weights from it.

One more thing I want to mention is that despite this rack being a little smaller and only offering two shelves, it really leaves a lot of room for expanding your workout space with an additional rack as you progress through your weightlifting journey.

Marcy Multiple Dumbbell Rack

Marcy Multiple Dumbbell Rack

The Marcy Multiple Dumbbell Rack features a unique design where is possible to store your dumbbells both on a shelf as well as on these holding spots on the side of the rack.

This design uses the space of the rack a lot more efficiently than something that just has shelves, and you can keep everything a little bit more organized depending on your storage preferences.

With this model, I can see it being practical to keep some of the dumbbells that you use the most on the top, with some of the lighter ones along the sides, and the heavier dumbbells positioned on the bottom.

The rack itself is made from a heavy duty steel, helping to keep it rather durable and sturdy on the ground, and it comes with a powder coated finish to prevent your weights and other workout equipment from coming into direct contact with the steel underneath.

The finish also helps to give it a more contemporary appearance so it looks quite good in a home gym or workout area.

The upright design, the compact layout, as well as the fact that you can access dumbbells from both the front and the side, make the Marcy Multiple Dumbbell Rack one of my recommendations if you’re looking for something reasonably priced that you can use in a smaller home gym area.

CAP Barbell Two Tier

CAP Barbell Two Tier

The CAP Barbell Two Tier is a rather simple weight rack that’s designed for keeping your dumbbells organized and off of the ground.

What I really like about this model is that the top shelf is flat and the lower shelf is angled, so it’s quite easy to grab the dumbbells that you need without having to struggle with any awkward design flaws.

The rack itself is made from a heavy duty steel and it’s capable of holding up to 500 lbs of weights, so it’s a suitable for beginner and intermediate lifters using a wide range of different dumbbells.

This is another great choice if you’re looking for a smaller, more reasonably priced weight rack to use at home for organizing your dumbbells to help make them more easily accessible and keep them off of the floor.

Marcy Combo Storage Rack

Marcy Combo Storage Rack

The Marcy Combo Storage Rack is a great choice if you’re working out with both dumbbells and weight plates and you need somewhere to store them and keep them organized when you’re not using them.

This rack comes with 3 different levels for dumbbell and kettlebell storage as well as four different bars where you can store your weight plates for easy access.

There is a maximum weight capacity of 1,000 lbs, so you can really get a lot of weights on it with a combination of both dumbbells and plates.

Should you happen to exceed the total capacity, it’s a lot easier to pick up a smaller dumbbell rack for any of your extra dumbbells, and just keep the plates and some smaller dumbbells on this rack.

The frame is made from a heavy duty steel and it comes with a powder coated finish that helps to prevent the rack from getting scratched up too much when you’re constantly moving the weights around.

At the edge of the bottom leg supports are rubber end caps that help to keep the rack in place when you’re using it and also protects your floor from getting scratched up.

One more thing I like is that this set comes with collars so that your plates won’t accidentally slide off onto the floor of from any vibrations, as long as you have collars in place.

For those of you working out with a combination of both dumbbells and weight plates that are looking for somewhere to keep everything easily accessible and organized, it’s the Marcy Combo Storage Rack that I would recommend taking a look at.

CAP Barbell Plate Rack (2-inch)

CAP Barbell Plate Rack (2-inch)

The CAP Barbell Plate Rack is what I stumbled across and is my top recommendation if you’re in the market for the best weight plate rack.

I know there are a lot of people doing compound exercises using a barbell and weight plates, rather than just focusing on dumbbells, and if you have your own home gym then this is a plate rack you’re going to want to check out.

It’s constructed from a heavy gauge steel and it’s capable of holding up to 500 lbs of plates, so it’s a rather suitable choice for both beginner and intermediate lifters.

The upright, tree design makes it easy to grab the plates that you need for your workout without having to bend over too much or struggle awkwardly to pick them up off the floor.

The base is designed to be wide, which helps with stability when it’s fully loaded, and also comes with a rubber base to help keep everything in place and to protect your floors from getting scratched up.

Choosing a Weight Rack: Buyers Guide

These days there is a lot of variety when it comes to the different designs, sizes, shapes, and construction quality of weight racks.

However, there are some features that you want to keep an eye out for when you’re looking for the best dumbbell rack to use at home.

Durable Construction

One of the first things you want to keep an eye out for is the overall construction of any of the racks that you’re interested in.

Since all that is designed for is to hold your dumbbells, you want to look for something simple and that’s also made using durable and quality materials.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of any racks that are made using stainless steel, because I find that this material is the best for holding my dumbbells and also offers plenty of long-term durability.

Most of the different steel racks are also quite thick, robust, and capable of holding hundreds of pounds (or more) of additional weight.

Having a rack that is sturdy and well built not only makes it easier to keep everything organized, but it also plays a role in your safety when you’re working out in your home gym.

Something poorly made might collapse when you put a weight down, and this could lead to some injuries depending on how all of the dumbbells fall to the ground.

While I recommend going with something made from stainless steel, I did notice that there are some models available made using iron.

The problem with iron is that despite the fact that it’s reliable and durable, it is a lot more susceptible to rusting, especially if you ding part of the frame and your sweat and moisture from the air builds up and causes it to corrode.

So, for the most part, something made from stainless steel is what I would recommend over any other materials because of the durability, reliability, and robust features that stainless steel offers.

Overall Design Layout

What you need to remember is that the main goal of any weight rack that you’re using is to keep your dumbbells and plates organized, kept off of the ground, and easy to grab whenever you want to start working out.

Be sure to keep your eye out for any of the models that organized the weights in a specific way that you prefer.

Most of the different racks that I have come across are rather compact, so they don’t take up too much space in your home workout area.

You definitely don’t want to go with something too small, because you might run out of room and it’s better to go with a bigger rack with plans to buy more dumbbells in the long run, rather than something small where you run out of space.

I personally prefer the models that are designed like a shelf, with two or three different platforms for me to place my dumbbells on, because it’s easier to reach the dumbbells when I need them.

If you’re using weight plates, you can also look for any racks that come with a spot for you to hang plates from, as this could save you money from having to buy a separate plate rack.

I also like the different models where I can grab all of the dumbbells from the front without having to walk around the rack, but again, your preferences might be different so try to decide what specific design you’re interested in and then work from there.

Adaptability

Like I mentioned up above, you want to make sure that you get a rack that’s a suitable size for your lifting needs.

When you’re just starting out working out at home, you likely won’t be using a very wide variety of different weights and you’ll be sticking to the smaller weights and dumbbells at the beginning.

As you get stronger and your workouts improve, you might want to start picking up some weights and dumbbells.

In this case, it’s always a good idea to go with a rack that’s a little bit bigger than you currently need so that you have some room to grow into it, rather than buying something too small and running out of space down the road.

The extra space can also help you to organize other pieces of home gym equipment, depending on what you’re using.
