The Health Benefits of Green Smoothies
For quite a while now I’ve been aware of the many health benefits of green smoothies and everyday I wake up I make sure to blend myself a delicious mixture of healthy greens and beneficial fruits.
Starting the day off with a green smoothie is a great way to get your body up and running with a wide range of different nutrients, vitamins, and it also makes it easier to increase your servings of fruits and vegetables.
I would definitely have to contribute green smoothies as something that had one of the biggest impacts on helping me lose more than 100 pounds, and without them I’m sure that my weight-loss journey would have stalled and ran into speed bumps a lot more often.
I would always start my day off with one of these, but you can still drink a green smoothie anytime during the day to take advantage of their many benefits.
They’re really easy to prepare, the ingredients are very affordable, and with so many vitamins, nutrients, and other health benefits, you want to start drinking them as soon as you can.
In this post I want to talk about some of the best health benefits of green smoothies and why you’re going to want to incorporate them into your daily diet routine.
The Health Benefits of Green Smoothies
Right off the bat, when you’re blending of the bunch of healthy vegetables and fruits together, you’re going to get a huge boost of nutrients and healthy vitamins in your body.
Eating a large salad along with a handful of different fruits can take quite a while, so for those of us that are short on time it’s a lot easier to blend everything up and drink it in a cold and refreshing smoothie.
It really depends on the different vegetables and fruits that you’re using, though most greens and fruits are packed full of healthy and beneficial vitamins that your body is going to enjoy.
For example, you’re going to be taking in loads of vitamin A and C when it comes to fruit and significant amounts of vitamin B and K when it comes to vegetables.
Along with these vitamins, you’re also going to experience a boost from other nutrients like potassium, iron, magnesium, as well as antioxidants.
Downing a smoothie is a lot easier than eating everything separately and it tastes a lot better than having to just swallow a few multivitamins, so it’s something I recommend doing everyday.
Better Than Juice
Even with so much information about how unhealthy store-bought juices can be, I still see a lot of people drinking juice everyday and wondering why they’re not able to lose weight or why they’re hungry a few minutes later.
The reason for this is all of the added sugar, and even if you buy juice that doesn’t have any sugar added, you still aren’t getting the benefits of if you made it home or if you decided to use the fruit in a smoothie.
What happens is that when the juices get extracted, all that’s left over is the liquid and some vitamins and minerals, but all the fiber is usually removed.
The fiber helps to fill you up, so you stay satisfied for a longer after drinking a mix of blended fruit and vegetables, and it also helps with digestion so that you don’t get one of those sugar rushes and crash shortly after drinking.
Helps for Weight Loss
Speaking of fiber, the high fiber content in green smoothies is going to help you stay full for longer periods of time, and this helps to prevent you from overeating during the day or snacking on unhealthy foods before your next meal.
Smoothies are also full of water and healthy fruits and vegetables, so by default they’re very low in calories depending on what else you add to it.
This means you’re going to stay full and satisfied during the day after drinking your smoothie and you’ll be able to make it to your next healthy meal rather than caving in and snacking on some chocolate, cookies, or just stuffing your face throughout the entire day.
It’s also a lot easier to track the calories of everything that you put into your smoothie, so you can still make them delicious tasting while staying within your daily calorie limits.
Healthy Source of Energy
Fruit is a decently healthy source of energy for your body, although the problem with just eating a piece of fruit is that you’ll get a quick burst of energy as the sugar gets quickly metabolized, but then you’ll come back down to lower energy levels rather quickly afterwards.
With a smoothie, the fiber and vegetables is going to help balance out the sugar content and slow down your digestion so that your metabolism doesn’t get that quick boost and this helps to keep you full of energy for longer periods of time during the day.
The boost of nutrients and vitamins is also going to help give you more energy and keep you feeling energized long after you down your smoothie.
Stronger Immune System
Incorporating a lot more vegetables and fruits into your daily diet helps your body to operate more efficiently and your immune system is strengthened from all of the additional nutrients and vitamins that it’s able to use.
This helps to keep your immune system up and running at a higher level, with more energy to draw from during the day, and this is going to help prevent you from getting sick as easily and will also help your body fight against diseases more effectively.
It’s really easy to add some immune system boosting fruits into your smoothies without having to sacrifice the taste, and some of these include things like citrus fruits, cranberries, and even some ginger.
Ever since I started drinking these on a regular basis, I noticed that I don’t get sick nearly as often and even during the winter months when everyone around me is sick I still seem to be running at full steam without having to deal with any colds, flus, or coughs.
Easy to Increase Your Vegetable Intake
I don’t know about you, but I personally get really bored of eating vegetables all the time.
With a smoothie I can quickly drink down a huge serving of healthy vegetables and fruits, and it also tastes really delicious so I don’t mind drinking them regularly.
It’s way easier to meet my daily veggie requirement instead of having to eat a huge salad or spend time preparing a pile of different vegetables.
The sweetness that’s added by the fruit really helps to make the blended vegetables taste a lot more delicious, and you can add a wider range of different vegetables than you would realistically be able to eat separately.
Another thing I see a lot of people do is buying a smoothie at Starbucks or any local shop on the street.
The few dollars that they spend can really add up over the period of a year, and it’s definitely a lot cheaper to blend your own green smoothies at home.
There are some great options for reasonably priced blenders and if you buy seasonal fruits and vegetables, you can easily get away without spending that much.
If you don’t want to prepare everything to make a smoothie, you can simply buy frozen and pre-prepared ingredients so all you have to do is just throw everything into your blender and you’ll be good to go a few moments later.
Making your own smoothies at home is not only cheaper, but it’s also healthier because you control which ingredients you use and there’s no added sugars, syrups, or other ingredients that you don’t know about.
Easy to Make
Along with being cheap, green smoothies are also quite easy to make.
A lot of people are skipping breakfast because of a busy schedule, but you can realistically prepare a smoothie in less than 5 minutes in the morning before work or at the end of the day as a healthy meal replacement.
Once you have a blender, you just have to buy some fresh produce once a week or so, and you can even freeze things or buy already frozen ingredients to make it even easier and quicker for you to blend everything up.
Your Kids Will Love Them
As a parent, you know how hard it can be to get your kids to eat vegetables and fruit on a regular basis.
Smoothies are an easy way to get your kids interested in meeting their daily vegetables and fruit requirements without even knowing it.
When you first get started, make sure to use a little bit more fruit so that the smoothies have a sweeter taste, and you can switch over to using more greens as your kids develop their flavor references.
Keeps You Hydrated
It can be hard to stay hydrated during the day when you’re at work or busy with your family, especially if you’re trying to drink six to ten glasses of water throughout the day.
On its own, water tastes pretty boring, although everyone knows how good it is for you so it’s a good idea to try to stay as hydrated as you can.
Green smoothies are great for staying hydrated as many fruits and vegetables are full of water and you can even add a little bit of extra water into your smoothie ingredients, or even use some ice if you would prefer it colder.
This can easily help you get in a few extra glasses throughout the day while enjoying the great taste of a smoothie without having to throw back some tasteless and boring glasses of water.
Loaded with Antioxidants
Green smoothies are packed full of healthy nutrients and vitamins, and they also provide a huge boost of antioxidants and phytonutrients for your body.
You can even decide to use fruits that come packed with antioxidants, like most berries, and you can even add other ingredients for an even bigger antioxidant boost, such as cacao.
Antioxidants are great at enabling your body to be better equipped at fighting diseases and also help to keep it running at a more optimal level.
Improved Focus and Mental Clarity
Another thing that I noticed from drinking green smoothies everyday was that I had a lot more focus and better overall mental clarity.
The huge vitamin and nutrients boost from these smoothies really helps to put my mind and body at ease, so instead of stressing about random things I’m able to focus more on the tasks in front of me and I’m not as worried about getting hungry, suffering from sugar rushes, and I’m better equipped that dealing with cravings as well.
Immediately after finishing my smoothie in the morning, I can almost feel my body start to turn on and power up, and it has definitely had a positive impact on my effectiveness at work and dedication to finishing chores and other tasks around the house.
Good for Your Gut and Colon
All of the fiber and nutrients in green smoothies has a beneficial impact on your colon and gut health.
The fiber helps everything to flow through you a lot better, so you’re not getting backed up as much or having to spend too much time on the toilet.
The vitamins and nutrients also helps to feed the microbes in your gut and this leads to a stronger immune system and better digestion.
